The bad

Your dental office is very informed about all the different types of insurance plans; however, there is absolutely no way that they can guarantee what your specific plan covers. There are literally thousands of insurance plans and more being created everyday.

The patient (you), need to know as much about your plan as possible. You are the insurance companies customer, not the dentist.

If your insurance plan doesn’t pay for your procedure, it is your responsibility to pay the dentist who did the work. Don’t try and blame the dental office for not knowing something about your insurance plan.

The Good

If insurance doesn’t cover a procedure, you can negotiate price.

Dentist love patients that don’t use insurance because it saves them time and money

You get better care when the dentist is not restricted by what insurance covers and doesn’t cover

Trade-offs

You will always pay more for dentistry using insurance because you are paying the insurance company to manage your healthcare and paying for the healthcare but insurance protects you from large immediate payouts for healthcare.
